Bill Bitter - 2009 ASTA Outstanding Orchestra Teacher

During the January 9-10 Arizona Music Educators Conference at the Mesa Marriot Conference Center, Bill Bitter, director of Highland High School orchestras, was honored as this year's ASTA Outstanding Public School Orchestra Teacher. Bill's career spans almost thirty years in the Gilbert Public Schools where he has guided the tremendous growth in their orchestra program.

Bill's vision and commitment to excellence is legendary. He has the drive to see his students succeed, and succeed they do! The awards his orchestras have received are numerous and even include an appearance at the prestigious Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in 2007. A good number of his former students have followed his example and are now orchestra directors, including at least four in the Gilbert schools.

Bill stands out in his generous contribution of time and talent to AMEA, ABODA, and ASTA. He isn't shy about taking on daunting projects either. Last year he served as the coordinator of the ASTA National High School Honor Orchestra, selecting the musicians who performed with Jung Ho Pak at the 2008 ASTA National Conference in Albuquerque.

This is only a very brief tribute to our friend, colleague, and truly Outstanding Public School Orchestra Teacher of the Year. Thank you, Bill Bitter, for inspiring us all.
