ASTA AZ: American String Teachers Association

Student Chapters

News from UA

The ASTA Chapter at the University of Arizona has had a productive 2009-2010 school year thus far. The four officers were delighted to attend the Fall Workshop back in September and returned to the chapter with much to share on teaching beginning bow hold and rhythms. More recently, Bethany Wigtil and Darian Douglas attended the ASTA National Conference in Santa Clara, CA. Representing the chapter, they divided and conquered the sessions, devouring as much information as possible. They returned to Tucson excited to share all of the knowledge they gained from sessions ranging from alternative styles and Celtic music to classroom management and how to teach special needs students. The knowledge they learned has not only helped their own teaching, but has allowed them to share new ideas with fellow ASTA members who teach private lessons and group classes through the U of A String Project.
Another success of the U of A chapter is outreach with local schools. Some of the members have taken the opportunity to work in sectionals with students at Lauffer Middle School in the Sunnyside School District, as well as students at Mt. View High School in the Marana School District. Future goals for the chapter include a collaboration with the UA CMENC and ACDA chapters for a fall event, as well as further outreach to local Tucson schools, formation of a UA ASTA String Quartet, and possible attendance at the 2011 National Conference.
