Welcome

ASTA Arizona
Committed to the advancement of string education and performance

Welcome to the website of the Arizona chapter of American String Teachers Association! Our growing chapter of 250 members represents string lovers of all sorts; violinists, violists, cellists, bassists, guitarists, harpists, performers, teachers, students, amateurs, professionals, parents of string players, and luthiers. You will find a very supportive and active community of string enthusiasts in ASTA Arizona.

Throughout the year we provide activities for our members and their students that promote their love of string playing and encourage growth of skills as they teach and perform. Here is a brief sampling of an ASTA AZ year:

  • The Fall Workshop for members with a leading clinician and a reading session of new materials
  • Special all day clinics for students--- Cellobration, Virtuoso Violas, Bass Jam
  • Solo Competition and Honors Recital with cash prizes for outstanding students
  • Awards to Outstanding Public School and Private Teachers
  • Master classes

Our website is now our primary means of communication with our membership. Online registration for events has taken the place of mailings. Also, note the informative articles in our Newsletter and String Notes. The Photo Gallery features pictures from ASTA events during the year.

Additionally, the national ASTA provides members with an award-winning journal published four times a year and hosts the most incredible three-and-a-half-day conference imaginable with performances and sessions that are guaranteed to inspire and inform. The national website is a wealth of information about ASTA and its services.

Dear Members,

It was so wonderful to see so many of you at the Fall Workshop on September 19! We had 75 in attendance, including 19 student chapter members from NAU, ASU, and UA. Dr. Stephen Benham's presentation for us was so inspiring and practical for young teachers and the more experienced. Look for his session at the ASTA national conference in Santa Clara, February 2009.

In January, ASTA Arizona will be hosting activities at the AMEA Conference, including a recital by winners of the ASTA Solo Competition, a general membership meeting, and a social event. We'd love to see 75 of our members at these events!

Due to several requests, a directory of members will be published and an online listing of private teachers will be compiled according to the area of the state.

Shelley Rich, President-elect, is spear-heading the initiation of ASTA Certificate Advancement Program in Arizona. Come to the Fall Workshop to learn more about this graded exam program for string students, or click here for detailed information on the national website.

On April 10 ASTA AZ will be hosting a master class and teaching seminar at ASU with renowned cellist, Jeffrey Solow. Learn more about Jeffrey on his website and be sure to view his collection of music cartoons and humor!

Thank you so much for the opportunity of being your ASTA AZ President! I've really enjoyed meeting more and more of you this year and exchanging emails. We are blessed to have such an enthusiastic membership!

Best wishes for a successful school year,
Jan McDivitt
